Welcome to the West Cumberland Choral Society web site The choir was established
in 1969 having originally started out under the auspices of the Lowther
Street Methodist Church choir conducted by Mr Pape. |
| In forty years, it is encouraging to
know that music still plays a large part of so many people's lives. Our
membership is in excess of 50 active members and our Junior and Intermediate
Choirs are thriving. In September 2009, Hugh Turpin takes up the baton as Director of Music with Frank Bowler as accompanist after Dorothy Edger retired as Director of Music for the adult
choir and Alan Redhead as accompanist following a total of 60 years service between them. Claire Hume continues to conduct the youth choirs with Helen Bushby and Aileen Rule as accompanists.
It has become tradition for us to perform the Messiah each year just before Christmas. This is a busy time for us as we also give a Christmas Celebration concert with a variety of traditional carols. Our main Spring concert, just before Easter. We are fortunate to be able to invite professional soloists from the Royal College of Music as well as local singers and musicians. We had a wonderful 40th anniversary in 2009 with a gala concert which featured locally born and internationally acclaimed soprano Joan Rogers. In 2010 our spring concert will feature the adult and youth choirs singing Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" with melodies made popular in the "Old Spice" advert, danced to by Brendan Cole in "Strictly Come Dancing" and more recently as background music to the firework scene in Disney's feature film "G-Force". |
